Phaos by artist and composer Monika Weiss is conceived as a sonic journey between Manhattan Island and Governors Island. Allowing the river to become her partner in the process of composition the sound, the artist recorded water and motor-like sounds, mixed with human voices, whispering, and singing. The many layers of sound overlap and erase each other, creating an ambient and abstract sound composition reminding the listeners of their own journey.

In the artist’s words:

“When I was invited to propose a project for Governors Island, at first I research the history of the place. In the process of going there, many times, back and forth, I realized the journey on the ferry was what I wanted to focus on. The ferry symbolically evokes the meaning of the work, connoting the lives of the immigrants arriving to this city about a hundred years before me. Phaos became a poetic investigation of the relationships between place and memory. Greek word “phaos” (light) etymologically relates to “phantom” (illusion, unreality). The project implies a possibility of an alternative reality coexisting within the palpable reality of a given space, blurring the division between internal life and the outside represented by the River.”

Phaos premiered in 2010 as a site-specific public project on Governors Island, New York as part of The Sixth Borough project curated by No Longer Empty’s Manon Slome, Julian Navarro, and Regine Basha in collaboration with Asher Remy Toledo, Hyphen-Hub, New York. In 2012 Phaos was included in the John Cage Centennial Tribute organized by Streaming Museum at Big Plaza in New York, curated by Nina Colosi.

Phaos – praca artystki i kompozytorki Moniki Weiss – została pomyślana jako dźwiękowa podróż między wyspą Manhattan a Governors Island. Czyniąc rzekę swoim partnerem w procesie komponowania dźwięku, artystka zarejestrowała odgłosy wody i silników, łącząc je z ludzkimi głosami, szeptem i śpiewem. Liczne warstwy dźwiękowe nakładają się na siebie i wzajemnie zacierają, tworząc abstrakcyjną kompozycję w stylu ambient, która przywodzi słuchaczom na myśl ich własną podróż.

„Gdy zaproszono mnie do przedstawienia projektu dla Governors Island, najpierw zgłębiłam historię tego miejsca. Wielokrotnie podróżując tam i z powrotem, zdałam sobie sprawę, że to właśnie przeprawa promowa jest tym, na czym chcę się skupić. Prom symbolicznie oddaje sens dzieła, przywołując losy imigrantów przybywających do tego miasta około sto lat przede mną. Phaosstało się poetyckim badaniem relacji między miejscem a pamięcią. Greckie słowo »phaos« (światło) jest etymologicznie powiązane z terminem »phantom« (widmo, złudzenie, nierealność). Projekt sugeruje istnienie alternatywnej rzeczywistości współistniejącej z namacalną rzeczywistością danej przestrzeni, zacierając granicę między życiem wewnętrznym a światem zewnętrznym, który reprezentuje rzeka”.

Premiera Phaos odbyła się w 2010 roku w ramach projektu site-specific na Governors Island w Nowym Jorku. Była to część inicjatywy The Sixth Borough, której kuratorkami i kuratorami są Manon Slome, Julian Navarro i Regine Basha z organizacji No Longer Empty, we współpracy z Asher Remy-Toledo (Hyphen-Hub, Nowy Jork). W 2012 roku praca Phaos włączona została do programu obchodów stulecia urodzin Johna Cage’a (John Cage Centennial Tribute), zorganizowanego przez Streaming Museum, Big Plaza w Nowym Jorku, kuratorka Nina Colosi.
