Thinking of History was commissioned by media art historian and author Ming-Yuen S. Ma. For this sound composition, sound artist Monika Weiss chose one sentence from his recent book, There is No Soundtrack: Rethinking art, media, and the audio-visual contract. Weiss composed Thinking of History in response to the following passage she chose from Ma’s book: “Thinking about history, through different notions of time, opens us to considering ancestral time, cyclical time, looping time, resonant time, and other new ways of listening to, thinking about, and recording history.”  Throughout the piece we hear underlying drone sounds which are based on Weiss’ acoustic piano improvisations, later transformed electronically such that the piano is no longer recognizable. In the third movement of the composition, the piano is fully recognizable. 

Thinking of History is composed in three movements. In the artist’s words, “through the layers of drone sounds, the first movement evokes the space of an ocean, perhaps an ocean of history. A female voice sings without words; we are hearing her as if arriving from a great distance. For this part I wrote a short melody for a voice a cappella and it was recorded by Polish vocalist Ania Wilkiewicz. I composed the middle movement based on the recordings of a number of invited individuals reading slowly the sentence, according to my directions, and in several languages. From those recordings I created a tempest of voices, collapsing layers of voices into one sonic field. I finished Thinking of History on February 23, 2022. The day after, on February 24th, the war against Ukraine began.”

Utwór *Thinking of History* powstał na zamówienie Ming-Yuen S. Ma – historyka sztuki mediów i autora książki *There is No Soundtrack: Rethinking art, media, and the audio-visual contract*. Do stworzenia tej kompozycji dźwiękowej artystka Monika Weiss wybrała jedno zdanie z tej publikacji. Utwór stanowi odpowiedź na następujący fragment tekstu Ma: „Myślenie o historii przez pryzmat różnych pojęć czasu otwiera nas na rozważania o czasie przodków, czasie cyklicznym, czasie zapętlonym, czasie rezonującym oraz innych, nowych sposobach słuchania historii, myślenia o niej i jej rejestrowania”. W całym utworze słyszymy dźwięki typu *drone* (ciągłe, niskie tony), oparte na improwizacjach Weiss na fortepianie akustycznym, które poddano elektronicznej transformacji tak, że brzmienie instrumentu stało się nierozpoznawalne. Dopiero w trzeciej części kompozycji brzmienie fortepianu jest w pełni czytelne.

Kompozycja *Thinking of History* składa się z trzech części. Jak opisuje to artystka: „Poprzez warstwy dźwięków typu *drone* pierwsza część przywołuje przestrzeń oceanu – być może oceanu historii. Słyszymy kobiecy głos śpiewający bez słów; dociera on do nas tak, jakby dobiegał z wielkiej odległości. Do tej części napisałam krótką melodię a cappella, którą wykonała i nagrała polska wokalistka Ania Wilkiewicz. Środkową część skomponowałam w oparciu o nagrania głosów osób, które – zgodnie z moimi wskazówkami – powoli odczytywały wspomniane zdanie w różnych językach. Z tych nagrań stworzyłam »burzę głosów«, łącząc ich poszczególne warstwy w jedno pole dźwiękowe. Pracę nad *Thinking of History* zakończyłam 23 lutego 2022 roku. Dzień później, 24 lutego, wybuchła wojna przeciwko Ukrainie”.
