ESSAY

Leukos is an ancient Greek word meaning white, or light, brightness. The artist did the outdoor performance on sheets of white canvas sewn together and placed in the middle of the college campus. In this public performance, Weiss lay on an enormous canvas for three days, in different weather conditions, and drew marks around her body. In silence with her eyes closed, she slowly drew traces of herself moving across the white ground, leaving a record of her temporal presence. During the duration of the performative action, the curatorial staff invited people passing by to join the artist in silence and make their marks alongside of hers. In focusing on the moment and embracing the opportunity for chance, the participants, some still and others in movement, left traces of their bodies. In order to film that performance, Weiss had a camera installed on the rooftop of a building that captured the changing canvas as it gradually became darker due to a combination of the markings made by many participants and the rain that smeared the marks. Later the sound of the wind was recorded as part of the sound composition. At the end of the performance, the canvas was moved into the main gallery, where its presence, according to the artist, felt like a shroud. - Julia P. REVIEW

Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen creates sculptures from the cast-off possessions and clothing of others, her materials speaking eloquently of their owners' absence. Polish-born artist Monika Weiss makes video projections and large-scale drawings that also refer to trace and memory by providing a visual and physical record of her performances. Two separate but complementary solo exhibitions beautifully captured each artist's individual vision and approach. (…) Weiss's multimedia work Leukos-Early Morning Light (2005) was created on the grounds of Lehman College in the Bronx. She spent three days drawing her silhouette with crayons, graphite, and pigments onto the surface of six long sheets of cotton. Other participants in the project left their own marks, while wind and rain darkened and blurred the graphite drawings. The cotton canvas was installed in the gallery, weighted down by rocks, with a video of the performance projected on the wall behind it. An accompanying soundtrack of opera arias underscored the disquiet and mystery that united these two artists' bodies of work.

Leukos to starożytne greckie słowo oznaczające biel, światło, jasność. Artystka wykonała performans plenerowy na zszytych arkuszach białego płótna, umieszczonych na środku kampusu uniwersyteckiego. Podczas tego publicznego performansu Weiss leżała na ogromnym płótnie przez trzy dni, w różnych warunkach pogodowych, i rysowała ślady wokół swojego ciała. W ciszy, z zamkniętymi oczami, powoli rysowała linie swojego ruchu na białym tle, pozostawiając ślad swojej obecności w czasie. W trakcie trwania performansu kuratorzy zapraszali przechodniów, aby w ciszy dołączyli do artystki i pozostawili ślady obok niej. Skupiając się na chwili i wykorzystując szansę, uczestnicy, niektórzy nieruchomi, inni w ruchu, pozostawiali ślady swoich ciał. Aby sfilmować ten performans, Weiss zainstalowała kamerę na dachu budynku, która uchwyciła zmieniające się płótno, stopniowo ciemniejące dzięki połączeniu śladów pozostawionych przez wielu uczestników i deszczu, który je rozmywał. Później dźwięk wiatru został nagrany jako część kompozycji dźwiękowej. Pod koniec performansu płótno zostało przeniesione do głównej galerii, gdzie jego obecność, według artystki, przypominała całun.

Fińska artystka Kaarina Kaikkonen tworzy rzeźby z odrzuconych przedmiotów i ubrań należących do innych ludzi, a wykorzystywane przez nią materiały wymownie świadczą o nieobecności ich właścicieli. Urodzona w Polsce artystka Monika Weiss tworzy projekcje wideo oraz wielkoformatowe rysunki, które – stanowiąc wizualny i fizyczny zapis jej performansów – również odwołują się do pojęcia śladu i pamięci. Dwie odrębne, lecz wzajemnie dopełniające się wystawy indywidualne w piękny sposób ukazały osobistą wizję i podejście każdej z artystek. (…) Multimedialna praca Weiss zatytułowana *Leukos – Early Morning Light* (2005) powstała na terenie Lehman College w dzielnicy Bronx. Artystka spędziła trzy dni na rysowaniu własnej sylwetki – przy użyciu kredek, grafitu i pigmentów – na powierzchni sześciu długich arkuszy bawełnianego płótna. Inni uczestnicy projektu pozostawili na nim własne ślady, podczas gdy wiatr i deszcz przyciemniały oraz rozmywały grafitowe rysunki. Bawełniane płótno zainstalowano w galerii, obciążając je kamieniami; na ścianie za nim wyświetlano natomiast zapis wideo z performansu. Towarzysząca wystawie ścieżka dźwiękowa (kompozycja Weiss), złożona z arii operowych, podkreślała nastrój niepokoju i tajemniczości – cechy wspólne dla twórczości obu artystek.
